AEW celebrates pro wrestling history, but they do not want to dwell in the past. The company is setting their target high as they continue competing in a space dominated by WWE. Tony Khan is investing a lot of money into this venture, including 8-fgures on AEW Games, because they want to press on to the future.
While speaking to Forbes, Khan addressed the fact that AEW is not alone in the pro wrestling space. He also questioned why there has to be only one big company that provides pro wrestling entertainment for fans.
“There’s no reason why there only needs to be one wrestling company…The wrestling business is hotter now than it’s been in a long time.”
Tony Khan wants AEW to be more than just a competitor of Vince McMahon’s company. He spoke about how AEW isn’t going to be the next “blank” wrestling company from the past. TK did not namedrop any specific pro wrestling company, but many fans could fill in the blanks. AEW is focused on pressing toward the future as they keep and catch an audience.
“I don’t want to be the next ‘blank’ wrestling company of the past—fill in the blank…We love wrestling of the past, wrestling of the present and wrestling of the future… That’s what gives us a great chance to retain and gain audience share.”
AEW is facing a difficult situation right now. Viewership has been below 500k for a couple of weeks, not a good sign for their Friday Night at 10:00 PM destination for Rampage. AEW Dynamite and Rampage will move to TBS in 2022 as well. That could also pose another issue for them.
We will have to see what is in the future, but the Khans are worth more than the McMahons, so there is a lot more money to invest.
