Michael Cole is known as the voice of WWE television, but there was a time when he was a fresh face in the company. Prior to bringing Cole into WWE, Todd Pettengill held down those backstage interview responsibilities, something that Cole later took over.

Metro.co.uk recently spoke to Todd Pettengill about Michael Cole, who was his replacement in WWE. Pettengill helped bring Cole aboard, because he was a huge pro wrestling fan. Obviously, the job fit him like a glove.

“Well number one, he was a friend. We go way back! He was my news guy at my radio station in Albany, New York back in the ’80s. I went on to New York City at PLJ and he was at CBS Radio and clearly we stayed in touch.”

“He was a massive wrestling fan! So, when it came time for me to step aside, he was the first choice. I knew he knew the product, he sort of looked like me, which I thought – ‘this is kinda funny, too!’ I respected the heck out of him and still do. I just knew that he was gonna be the right guy.”

Todd Pettengill returned to WWE for NXT TakeOver: In Your House. He made a fine host for that throwback special. We’ll have to see if he comes back to WWE on a regular basis after that. We certainly know where to find Michael Cole every week on Friday Night SmackDown.

What’s your take on Todd Pettengill coming back every now and then? Should WWE bring him back more often? Sound off in the comments!
