WWE released Braun Strowman from his contract, freeing up $1.2 million per year in the process. AEW could be interested in him, and Mark Henry said that there is interest on both sides.
AEW already wanted Tommy End, that was already established. The former Aleister Black could have one dream match after another in AEW, including a barnburner against Andrade El Idolo that WWE never let them have on the main roster.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer brought up this situation. He said that the interesting part is that Strowman doesn’t fit the mold of who AEW fans typically want to see. On the other hand, Tommy End is exactly who AEW fans want to see.
“I know AEW is interested in Tommy End, but I don’t know anyone else for sure, for sure. Strowman is the weird one, because it’s like, number one to get him it’s gonna take a lot of money. Number two, he is a big star and people know who he is but he’s not going to be a needle mover, because he wasn’t a needle mover in WWE, and he is two years past his peak as an attraction.”
“Yes, when you go to a new company it is a fresh face and you’re bringing in someone new, but all I think about when you put Strowman in AEW is that it’s exactly the kind of guy that AEW fans don’t want.”
Bringing in someone like Braun Strowman to AEW would “work against” bigger guys that they already have. Wardlow, Lance Archer, and others would likely suffer. We’ll have to see what’s up in this situation, but AEW seems interested in two men that WWE just released and they could each garner a much different reaction from fans.
