Cody Rhodes is known for his fiery promos on AEW Dynamite, but they are not improvised. A lot of work goes into figuring out how to put everything together to make the perfect promo each time he takes the microphone.

Some pro wrestlers might say that their promos are improvised, especially those from previous generations. Rhodes said that is “bullsh*t,” and he used himself as an example of how those promos are heavily workshopped; and he even uses focus groups at times.

While speaking to Gamespot’s Wrestle Buddies podcast, Rhodes explained all of the things that it really takes before his promos are ready for Dynamite.

“This is probably gonna sound not cool, because a lot of wrestlers–especially wrestlers from my dad’s era–will lie to you and say, ‘Oh, I just came up with that promo right there on the spot,’ which is bullsh*t’. But whatever. I workshop my promos heavily for weeks on end. We have a full focus group for them, as crazy as that sounds. This is a data-based company, so I workshop everything I do. And because my promos have been held to a really high standard–people pick at them and find things in them and they put a microscope on them, which I love. With that in mind, when I was doing the promo I couldn’t come up with a finish.”

Cody Rhodes’ promos bring a lot of history to AEW’s current storylines. We’ll have to see what he says next, but the American Nightmare has a big task against Anthony Ogogo at Double or Nothing. Rhodes not only had to hype that match on the microphone, but he now has to carry the contest against an incredibly green opponent.
