Why WWE Is Holding Throwback SmackDown Tonight

WWE is holding a Throwback edition of SmackDown tonight, but there is nothing really announced to make the episode special. There is a reason behind this call for a retro SmackDown and it all has to do with synergy.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, FOX Sports is doing something retro with NASCAR. That caused WWE to do the same as a tie-in with the race. We’ll have to see what kind of theme WWE comes up with for the blue brand.

The 5/7 Smackdown show will be some sort of a retro show. That’s part of a tie-in with a NASCAR race on FOX with a similar theme so that’s where it came from. So this appears to have been a FOX directive. Rollins vs. Cesaro is the only match announced so far

The ONLY match they have announced for the Throwback SmackDown so far is Seth Rollins vs Cesaro. That is a throwback from WrestleMania 37. It will be interesting to see if they just throw some new retro graphics on the screen or whether they go all out and even bring in something like the SmackDown fist.
