Kevin Owens is a former Universal Champion. He hasn’t been able to regain that title since Goldberg took it from him on the road to WrestleMania 33, but it was still a big moment for his career. He also wishes he could have enjoyed it more.
talkSPORT recently spoke to Owens where he revealed how his mindset is different now from where he was as Universal Champion. He was so focused on being the best that he didn’t have the chance to enjoy it. This is one of the main reasons why he would love another run with that title.
“I don’t really care how it ended. It ended the way it ended and they all have to end at some point. At least it ended for a reason. There was a reason for it ending beyond ‘hey, Owens isn’t doing a good job.’ Because that wasn’t the case. Whether it should have ended that way or not is another discussion altogether. What I mean the most when I talk about I’d love to have another Universal title run to make things right is for myself. My mindset has changed a lot since I was champion and back then I didn’t take the time to enjoy any of it.”
Vince McMahon, Triple H, and even Owens’ own wife helped him realize that he needed to have fun with it. Enjoying the experience is one of the best parts about being on top, but he didn’t have time to really appreciate things at the time.
“I was just too focused on trying to make it good, make it better, make it as good as it can be and I really, really didn’t enjoy it the way I should have. My wife was instrumental in making me realize that. My parents as well, even guys like Shawn Michaels, Triple H and even Vince McMahon himself, they’ve all told me that it seemed like I forgot to enjoy this part of things and if you’re not going to enjoy being the champion, then what are you going to enjoy in this industry?”
Kevin Owens is still on a hot streak, but he’s seemingly nowhere near a top title shot at this juncture. Perhaps 2021 will see Owens rise up the ranks once again, because he would certainly appreciate another opportunity to enjoy his time in the spotlight.
