The current product of WWE has been getting criticized for a lot of reasons over the years, the reusing of several match types and 50/50 booking being just a couple of reasons. It seems a pro wrestling veteran has shared his thoughts regarding WWE overusing one of the company’s iconic match types.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Chris Jericho explained the importance of storylines and how the corresponding matches should fit the storylines.
Jericho then went on to criticize WWE for ‘prostituting’ the Hell In A Cell matches while adding how the upcoming Blood & Guts match between the Inner Circle and The Pinnacle has a storyline significance to it.
“I’m a big proponent that the match has to fit the story, not a story just to have a match. For example, Hell in a Cell. ‘Oh we’ve got Hell in a Cell pay per view coming up next month. Let’s put together a three week story and put them in the cell. Then we’ll have a tag team in the cell, we’ll have a women cell, we’ll have a midget cell.’ It’s like, you’re just prostituting this gimmick.
“For Blood and Guts the story needs to be there first. And for the first time since last March we have this story between these two factions that, right out of the gate, there’s a lot of intensity and a lot of interest. So let’s put it in the Blood and Guts.”
We certainly wonder whether WWE will eventually improve their product and not overuse gimmicks and match types. Fans would certainly be more appreciative of the product if the company makes the necessary changes.
