WWE really didn’t want AEW getting off the ground. They offered the Young Bucks a ton of money to sign with them instead. They also slotted NXT directly against AEW on Wednesday Nights, but that didn’t stop Dynamite or their passionate fan base.
We previously covered how Chris Jericho discussed when the Wednesday Night Wars really ended. To him, it was the moment TNT offered them a $175 million multi-year deal.
While speaking to Wrestling Observer Radio, Chris Jericho said there is no guarantee that AEW will even be around after their four-year contract expires. He also strongly believes that if they continue in this direction even bigger things are on the way. At the end of the day, AEW is a better show than WWE in his honest opinion.
“There’s no guarantee that AEW will be around past our television deal ending, but if we keep doing the numbers we’re doing and telling the stories we’re telling, the next deal might be even bigger than the last one. Then you’re really dangerous, because our show is better than their show. I’m just telling you, I’m being completely honest, it’s better than their show.”
“As a result of that, I think people will continue to check us out, especially now since they don’t have to make a choice on a Wednesday. Last week wasn’t as good with the Presidential speech, but I think that we really shown that we did earn a chunk of that [NXT] fan base that now that they’ve sampled AEW they will continue to be there for us as we continue to grow.”
AEW Dynamite’s viewership fell again this week, and it dropped hard. We’ll have to see if they can pull those numbers up, but Blood & Guts next week is likely to do just that. It will definitely be a better show than anything WWE puts out if you ask Le Champion.
