WWE brought a romantic angle to SmackDown where they paired up Rey Mysterio’s daughter Aalyah and Murphy. That angle lasted for months, finally ending with Murphy being accepted as one of the Mysterio Family. Now that angle has been abandoned.

Murphy was one of the Superstars around the ring during Seth Rollins’ return on SmackDown. It was thought that Murphy’s angle with Aalyah would pick back up once The Messiah returned, but that didn’t happen. Rollins didn’t even mention Murphy during his promo on SmackDown.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that the angle between Aalyah and Murphy was dropped. There is no storyline explanation behind it either.

It was just an angle dropped. There’s no backstory or behind-the-scenes story on it. I guess they had no idea where to take it and thus dropped it

Ringside News exclusively reported that Murphy has been around backstage at SmackDown for weeks. They never used him and have no current creative direction for his character. Aalyah Mysterio never signed a real contract with WWE and she was on a per-appearance deal.
