Jim Ross worked in WWE for over two decades and has been part of numerous iconic moments in the company. He has also seen tragic scenes unfold in front of his eyes, including Owen’s Hart’s unfortunate passing at Over The Edge in 1999.

While speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross revealed that he did not like the ending to Chyna vs Ivory at the 2001 Royal Rumble, as it reminded him of Owen Hart’s death.

The match concluded with Ivory beating Chyna after Chyna suffered a neck injury as part of the storyline. Jim Ross had to lower his tone in order to sell the injury and Jerry Lawler left the commentary booth to check up on her.

Ross said that the finish was simply wrong and never should have been booked in the first place, adding that it ‘smelled like sh*t.’

“Any time you do a finish that harkens back to a tragedy, it’s wrong. Same theory of using religion or politics in a wrestling show. It’s wrong. You can’t gift wrap it or make it look nice. When you unwrap the package, it’s gonna smell like shit and that whole thing was that way.”

Ross added that it was unlikely Vince McMahon thought that the ending would be reminiscent of Owen Hart’s death.
