During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed this surprising angle. He said that it’s likely WWE will replace Pearce with Kevin Owens. If they don’t do that then this could be a bad sign for the company’s current creative situation.

“It’s possible that they’ll change it back to Kevin Owens because it seems like a strange match to make; because if they do that it pretty much tells you that they literally have no ideas at all. I’m not ruling out that they’ll go back to Kevin Owens.”

It seems that WWE wrote a kayfabe injury angle last week for Kevin Owens to keep him off television this week. Owens suffered a “spinal contusion and bruised kidney” from the fall last week.

The Royal Rumble spot was taken by Adam Pearce, but we’ll just have to see if the former 5-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion is actually in the plans to follow through with that match.
