Sting’s arrival in AEW could mean a lot of things, and he might get physical. The new implementation of cinematic matches could open a lot of doors for him.
It was previously reported that Sting wanted to do a cinematic match against The Undertaker. WWE didn’t want to do that, and then Sting left the company. The real story could be what comes next in AEW.
During AEW Unrestricted, Sting confirmed that he wants to do cinematic matches. Tony Khan asked him if he was open to the idea, and The Icon was more than happy to say “yes.”
“Here recently I didn’t want it to end the way it ended [in WWE]. I was pushing to get a cinema style match with Taker. For probably a litany of different reasons it just wasn’t going to happen.”
“So, when Tony called and, you know and spoke with me, he said ‘are you interested in doing cinema style matches?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I am [laughs] I am.’ So, I thought I’d like to come back and do that and not disappear again with my tail between my legs. I’d love to be able to go out and, I don’t want to go out on top, just to go out in a positive light, you know?’
Sting will get his hands dirty in AEW, but it might not be in a traditional match. At this point, seeing Sting mix it up in a cinematic match has a lot of potential, especially since pro wrestling fans have grown accustomed to that style of presentation in the last year.
AEW inked a multi-year contract with Sting. He could find himself in a few programs during that that time where he sees himself battling an opponent. The big question is who Sting will face first.
