Shayna Baszler is 1/2 of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, and there is a legacy that she intends to leave on the business. She wants to be seen as a legit wrestler, and she looks up to those pioneers of pro wrestling for inspiration.
Baszler is a former NXT Women’s Champion. Her main roster call-up did not result in the push some expected, but she pressed on, and now it seems she’s on a much better track.
While speaking to After The Bell, Shayna Baszler explained that she wants to present the kind of character that isn’t really represented in American pro wrestling. She wants to be a female wrestler who can be seen as a legitimate threat.
“There have always been the names you talk about and it’s always been men — that are ‘wrestlers,’ right? Like you talk about Dean Malenko and [William] Regal. These guys you can tell they’re wrestlers. They’re not these bigger-than-life, over-the-top characters necessarily. But man, but the time they got done people were like, ‘man these guys are legit’ and if they ever piss them off, they would mess someone up. They could if they so chose.”
“I think that’s kind of the legacy I want to leave there’s, at least in the United States, there’s not a list of women that are like that.”
Baszler and Nia Jax are still WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, and both were drafted to the RAW brand. We’ll have to see what’s next for Baszler, but it appears her momentum is just getting started on the main roster after a bit of a slow beginning.
