WWE created a lot of buzz when they issued a ban on third party deals. There were questions left about Twitch and Cameo accounts. Then the company cleared that up by saying that they are taking full control of those as well.
AJ Styles recently spoke during his own Twitch stream about WWE’s new mandate to control Superstar accounts. He admitted that the news came to him online and he found out like everyone else. This is something he said should be fixed.
Styles then went on to explain that WWE Superstars aren’t making millions off their Twitch streams. They get to connect with fans which is something the pandemic took away from them. The closest they get is the ThunderDome screens now. His goal is to let fans know what’s really going on and how it’s not all “doom and gloom.”
“Nobody is on here making millions on Twitch. We are not pro gamers. That’s not what is happening. I feel like, for us, it’s an opportunity to do what we love – play video games and interact with our fans. It’s a chance to appreciate you guys appreciating us – that’s basically what’s going on. Especially with what’s going on in the world. We don’t get to see you guys anymore unless you’re on the video screen in the ThunderDome.”
“We don’t get to see you; we don’t get to talk to you; we don’t get to do much. This is the next best thing. I don’t know what they’re hoping to get out of this. The communication has not been as great as we’d like. There’s a lot of us who are all on the same page – we’ve talked to each other. We’re facing the same thing. It’s all doom and gloom or, ‘Oh, that’s all they want.’ I feel like this is an opportunity for me and my channel to say, ‘This is what’s really going on’ and debunk some stupid rumors that are going on.”
There might be a lot of questions, but WWE made it pretty cut and dry in the email that they sent out to talent.
Superstars must sign over their Twitch and Cameo accounts to the company. They must allow WWE to receive all of their payments. Then the company will divvy out a percentage to those Superstars that will come out of their downside guarantee. It essentially means that Superstars will be generating their own downside guarantee in their free time as they stream and do short personalized video messages.
