WWE had a lot of help achieving their current position in television, and they just lost a big ally at NBCUniversal.
Deadline reports that Chris McCumber left the company after 19 years. McCumber was President of SyFy and USA Network. He told his team in a memo on Wednesday that he is leaving the company.
A restructuring of NBCU recently took place as Mark Lazarus, Chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming began instituting many changes. McCumber is thought of as the person most responsible for negotiating a deal between NBC and WWE which led to their current huge money deal.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that McCumber acted as a liaison between NBCU and WWE for years. Now they no longer have that contact within the company.
USA Network likely won’t cancel WWE programming. They are still the highest viewed show on the network every week. This is still a surprising departure, and some are also wondering if a difference won’t be seen until new television contract talks begin.
