Sometimes a Superstar will find their way into other areas of the business after their in-ring career comes to a close. Some like Samoa Joe will take a pit stop on commentary during a break from in-ring competition. AJ Styles doesn’t see himself doing the same.
During a recent Twitch stream, AJ Styles spoke about the possibility of becoming a commentator. He doesn’t think he would be good at that because he’s too involved with what he’s watching. He likes to be the one playing the game and he gets “sucked into it.”
He then revealed that he never wanted to be a pro wrestler either. He simply got it in his head that he was going to do it, and that’s what he did.
“I don’t think I would be a good commentator,” Styles revealed. “I get too involved. It’s like when I play video games – I just get sucked in to it. It wouldn’t be good. I could see myself being a recruiter or scout, if you will. I really want to find guys and girls that have wanted to be in the business their whole lives. Or even find people that got into the business and just became obsessed with it, like I was.”
“I never wanted to be a pro wrestler. Once I got it in my head that I was going to wrestle, it was all I thought about. It was like a vision quest. You couldn’t stop me and couldn’t tell me that I wasn’t going to make it in the business. You couldn’t tell me I wouldn’t be somewhere, I was going to make it and you couldn’t tell me any different. I was obsessed over it. I just wanted to learn and understand everything.”
You can never say never in pro wrestling. If Vince McMahon asked AJ Styles to sit in on commentary for a few weeks, it’s highly likely Styles would oblige. He’s not one to say no to the man signing those big checks for him.
Right now AJ Styles is content wrestling in the ring because that’s what he wants to do in life. It’s been his obsession for a very long time, and that’s not likely to cease any time soon.
