WWE NXT will be on Tuesdays for the next two weeks on the USA Network, but they still found a way to air on Wednesday nights on Syfy. There is an interesting reason for that, but it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
AEW Dynamite has been forced to switch their show around for the past couple of weeks due to the NBA Playoffs. Now WWE NXT is dealing with the NHL post season. WWE NXT is still able to find Syfy on Wednesday, and Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that it’s only because of one reason.
“They can’t let them go unopposed […] I asked somebody [in WWE] and it’s like ‘we can’t let them go unopposed,’ you know what if? I think that there’s a feeling that if the number gets too big that people will look at them a different way. To be fair, AEW for the last two weeks they put on the pay-per-view, but they put it on YouTube, and it was not competition at all and I don’t know that a re-run on Syfy going head-to-head is going to be major competition to AEW, but the fact that they’re putting it there tells you from both sides, you know whatever, you know it’s like they can’t, you know they can’t let it go unopposed. Neither side did. They’ll say they’re just doing it for themselves, but clearly you know clearly there’s competition head-to-head.”
We’ll have to see how the NXT re-run on Syfy performs, but both sides are trying to make sure that they present some sort of competition. AEW found consistent ratings with their Dynamite episodes on different nights. NXT has a huge NXT Title match booked for Tuesday which could also draw a ton of viewers.
