Rey Mysterio was thrown off Titan Towers during Money In The Bank, but he survived and showed up on RAW the next night. Then Seth Rollins tried to take his eye out. Now Mr. 6-1-9 is listed in “critical condition.” His current WWE status is interesting.
Mysterio’s contract is up in a matter of months. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Rey Mysterio has yet to sign a new deal with the company. It’s not expected that he will leave, but it’s not guaranteed that he will stay either.
This is the situation with Mysterio. They shot an angle on Raw this week where Rollins took out his eye. Mysterio’s contract is coming due and at least as of a week ago he had not signed a new deal. I don’t expect him to leave but it’s not a lock that he won’t.
It was noted that Mysterio’s eye injury was done so he can feud with Seth Rollins if he returns. If Rey Mysterio doesn’t sign a new deal then he’s “following the Matt Hardy playbook if he leaves.”
Mysterio might decide to do whatever he can to not upset WWE. He doesn’t want to burn any bridges for his son Dominick to eventually get an opportunity with the company.
Rey Mysterio signed his contract with an 18-month out clause before AEW was a reality. WWE wanted to keep Mysterio from working New Japan Pro Wrestling events. WWE had also just inked their new television contracts at the time so they were able to offer Mysterio a substantial deal.
AEW could always be an option for Rey Mysterio, but it’s unknown if they will be able to offer any huge contract right now.
