Update: Matt Hardy has confirmed that he will be at The Big Event this weekend.
Original: Matt Hardy’s first public appearance outside of WWE seemingly got in the way of his AEW debut.
We previously reported that since WWE Superstars are appearing at The Big Event on Saturday that means AEW stars are banned from the convention. Hardy was previously scheduled meaning he couldn’t appear for AEW and keep his appearance.
Dave Meltzer explained during Wrestling Observer Radio that even though Matt Hardy remained off Dynamite this week he still apparently wasn’t permitted to attend the Big Event.
“Monday I was told that this was a very interesting issue because if Matt Hardy shows up on Wednesday then he’s not going to be able to go to this appearance because I think WWE found out — everyone knew he was going to AEW, but if he didn’t show up on Wednesday for AEW then maybe they’d let it go. On Tuesday I pretty much heard on Tuesday that he’s probably not showing up on Wednesday. Then I found out that Terry Funk is replacing him on that convention.”
“So, I guess they much have pushed the idea that even though he’s not on TV he’s an AEW guy so he can’t come. So, as far as I know he’s not going to that think on Saturday which was supposed to be his first appearance outside of WWE, but yeah, I don’t know which week he’s coming in, but obviously it’s pretty much happening.”
It’s interesting that Matt Hardy was pulled from the event even though he seemingly did what he could to keep the convention appearance. We’ll have to see when Matt Hardy makes his big debut, but it didn’t happen this week.
