WWE saw a big changing of the guard backstage in the company. Sometimes this kind of change can be a bad thing. Other times the rejuvenated mindset can come out of the situation.
Jerry Lawler was recently on The Steve Austin Show where he discussed how Paul Heyman has changed things in his Executive Director role. Since Heyman entered the situation it seems that some Superstars have been able to stray from the idea of tightly written promos and show more of their own personalities.
“Now that Paul Heyman is sort of in charge of RAW, it’s so much not the characters that are being predetermined by the writers or creative. They’re giving the guys a chance to be themselves just like [Austin was] back when [Austin] became ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. Nobody was telling you, ‘oh, this is how it [has] got to be.’ [Austin was himself] and [he] was given that opportunity and [Austin] took it.”
WWE is still scripted and the ideas of writers coming up with a majority of the dialogue is still very likely. Everyone centers around Vince McMahon and his approval. It’s still nice to know that they are apparently loosening the reins for a few Superstars that they trust to relay the angle in their own words.
