Welcome to Ringside News’ results coverage of NXT TakeOver: Portland!
Tonight’s TakeOver will feature six matches, as opposed to the usual five that we get on most NXT PPV’s. And the marquee match tonight is the NXT Championship bout between Tommaso Ciampa and Adam Cole. This feud has gotten rather personal as Ciampa tries to win goldie back and Cole looks to keep The Undisputed Era in the black.
The other major title match tonight sees Rhea Ripley defend against Bianca Belair. If memory serves, this will be Belair’s second title match but she seems to go from strength to strength. However she’s going to be sharing a ring with Rhea Ripley, who just won the belt and has a lot more to lose; a WrestleMania showdown with Charlotte Flair.
The other two titles match tonight see the Broserweight’s, Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle, winners of the 2020 Dusty Rhodes Classic, face The Undisputed Era for the tag titles. And Keith Lee faces his long time foe, Dominic Dijakovic for the NXT North American Championship. And finally there is two non-title matches, with Dakota Kai facing Tegan Nox in a street fight, and Finn Balor battling Johnny Gargano.
And that’s the preview for tonight’s TakeOver event. Follow along here or by downloading the Ringside News app, as well as on Twitter and Instagram. Enjoy the show!
We’re live in the arena in Portland and Charly Caruso welcomes everyone to the kick-off show, as she stands on the stage with Sam Roberts and Mansoor.
We see a video from earlier today of Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle arriving in Oregon on a plane, and trying to transport their Dusty Cup to the arena. Riddle somehow got the golf cart to the airport. Sam Roberts is in full heel mode and he insults the Broserweights, saying they’re cute and funny but they’re not a good team. Not compared to The Undisputed Era. Mansoor disagrees and earns a few cheap pops from the fans.
Poppy is shown arriving at the building with her bandmates. She will be performing at the start of the show.
We get a video package for Finn Balor Vs. Johnny Gargano, then see Balor in the arena earlier today. Sam Roberts talks about how much better Finn Balor is now, and Gargano acts like he is a good guy but he sees through it. Mansoor says both men have a lot to lose tonight, particularly Balor with his renewed persona here in NXT. Roberts says that, if Gargano doesn’t win tonight, it proves he isn’t the heart of NXT.
The panel talk Keith Lee Vs. Dominic Dijakovic. Roberts says that the big difference between these men is a title. He says that Lee and Dijakovic were tied by fate but since then Lee has won a title and left Dominic in his dust. Everytime Sam speaks the fans boo, while cheering for Mansoor.
The final match discussed is Tommaso Ciampa Vs. Adam Cole, and Roberts says Cole wants to win more. He says Ciampa was his favourite wrestler…two years ago. And since then NXT has passed him by and that’s because Adam Cole was driving the truck. As usual, Mansoor disagrees and says that Ciampa wants it more because he feels it is his destiny. They debate if a loss for Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly could put Cole under even more pressure.
And that’s it for the TakeOver pre-show. We heading into the main card in Portland!
