WWE wrote a very interesting segment into RAW this week. Matt Hardy approached Randy Orton in the ring before bringing up his past with Edge. This brought out “Lita” chants as fans remembered their pro wrestling scandals.

Hardy took a conchairto to the head from Orton. This was a way of writing Matt Hardy off of television. His WWE contract expires on March 1st so he could be free to go elsewhere at that point.

It was noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that this segment served multiple purposes. It was a way to get Matt Hardy off of television, but it was also a means to give Edge an excuse to wait an additional week before coming back to seek retribution against RKO.

It was also a way to keep Edge out selling the impact of his injuries for another week while giving Orton a strong segment.

Edge signed a huge three-year deal with WWE. That includes three matches a year and a reported twenty-five appearances on WWE television over that time.

WWE only has two more matches available this year and twenty-four appearances over the next three years. They need to use the Rated R Superstar’s appearances wisely because they aren’t cheap. This week’s Matt Hardy segment was a heat-driving angle that will give Edge even more to fight for upon his return.
