Shawn Spears is set to take a night off from in-ring action in the name of putting himself behind the commentary desk, as the man formerly known as Tye Dillinger tries his hand at a different skill.
Spears still seems to have a lot of gas left in the tank when it comes to what he can accomplish in All Elite Wrestling, but it’s always nice to expand your horizons – even if it turns out to be for just one night only.
Shawn is coming off the back of the continuation of his feud with Joey Janela, which we could see develop even further on Dark this evening.
Spears isn’t tipped to become an AEW World Champion any time soon, but you don’t need to be lifting the main title up high in order to be able to make a difference, especially in a promotion as fresh as AEW is.
The fact that they’ve added a show like Dark into their weekly programming schedule can only mean good things for them moving forward, as they attempt to give everyone a chance to shine on a week to week basis.
We’re quite interested to see what sort of an approach we get from Spears during his spell on commentary, mainly because the likes of CM Punk and Austin Aries have proven in the past that a commentary stint can actually lead to quite an interesting return to the ring. Then again, perhaps we’re just reading far too much into it.
