Paul Heyman made his way to the ring in the middle of Hulk Hogan’s posing to start off WrestleMania with a Universal Title match. If this seemed like it was an “in the moment” kind of thing that’s because it was.
Dave Meltzer explained on Wrestling Observer Radio that after the show of shows was already started WWE was still rearranging things. Therefore, Hulk Hogan had no idea what Paul Heyman was doing because nobody told him that the first match was changed to the Universal Title contest.
“Believe it or not the show had already started. They rearranged the order of the show that [the Universal Title] match would go on after they had already started. It was actually 5:30 local time before the switch was made to put them on first.”
“Hogan when he was doing his promo had no idea what Paul Heyman was doing when he was walking out because when Hogan was told what he was supposed to do, his little shtick that wasn’t gonna happen and I guess nobody told him that they had switched it.”
The Universal Title match didn’t last long and it was a big high-note to start the show. It was not WWE’s original plan though as AJ Styles vs Randy Orton was initially slated to open the event.
