Rey Mysterio’s match against Samoa Joe was over almost as soon as it started. Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch and that was all she wrote. Fans were a bit disappointed to say the least.
WWE brought Mysterio back to the company so he could wrap up his career with a big-money contract. However, as Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio the company actually had much different intentions.
“Why’d they spend so much money to do this to him? I mean they paid him a ton because they didn’t want him with AEW or actually it was New Japan at the time, but they just wanted him. They wanted him off the indie scene.”
Mysterio was working dates for NJPW and had made promises to make more matches happen. Then a WWE contract came around just in time for them to encourage him not to work ALL IN. Of course, Mysterio worked ALL IN, but then he quickly had to go to WWE.
They just wanted him “off the scene,” but once WWE got Mysterio back it seems like they didn’t know what to do with him.
It looks like Mysterio’s ankle wasn’t in fighting shape which is why his match against Samoa Joe was over so quickly. This is a shame because Mysterio gave fans a lot of hope that he would be able to really compete.
We still have to wonder how different things could have been for Rey’s WrestleMania moment if WWE had kept the original plan for a one-on-one match against Andrade instead at the show of shows. It also would have been much different for Mysterio all around if he would have turned down WWE’s offer for another run and remained on the indies.
