WWE is a business and they like to own anything they can. Their ownership extends to the names that their Superstars use on social media as well. This is why it is so interesting when a Superstar changes their name on social media to the one that is legally theirs.
We have noticed a trend on social media of Superstars changing their names on social media to their legal names only to hear rumors a short time later that they are wanting to leave the company.
Lance Storm said on Figure Four Daily that the reason why Superstars are changing their names is because a separation from WWE is somewhere in their minds. They want to establish their own brand apart from the name WWE gave them. It is very interesting how Total Divas seems to assist this process out by using so many of the Superstars’ real names on the show.
He first noticed this with Bad News Barrett and a short time after changing his name on social media to Stu Bennett, he was gone from the company.
Tye Dillinger (now Shawn Spears on the indies) is another example of this as he changed his social media name to Ronnie Arneill before requesting his WWE release. So the next time you notice a WWE Superstar changing up their name on social media it could mean more than a simple edit of their profile setting.
