Finn Balor’s career picked up a lot of steam in New Japan Pro Wrestling where he was the first leader of the Bullet Club. He left NJPW just as AJ Styles was coming in and they were like two Superstars passing in the night before eventually arriving in WWE together.
Last year’s WWE TLC event was scheduled to feature Finn Balor vs Bray Wyatt, but Wyatt got a case of the mumps and couldn’t wrestle. Therefore, WWE flew AJ Styles in from South America where the SmackDown brand was touring at the time and booked a spur of the moment dream match between two former Bullet Club leaders.
Balor recently spoke to Not Sam Wrestling where he was happy this match went down in a way, but it could have really used more of a build.
While it wasn’t good that Wyatt got sick, it was a silver lining in Finn’s eyes that the plans for Bray Wyatt to wrestle as Sister Abigail were scrapped. Balor was also set to reveal an orange version of The Demon to counteract the Sister Abigail gimmick, but that didn’t happen either.

“I’m happy in hindsight in the sense of what could have been for that show but like you know with The Demon vs Bray Wyatt and all that kinda wacky storyline that we were doing at the time and then what it transformed into which was like the match with me and AJ. Obviously, it was unfortunate that three of the boys went down really sick, but I think that you know I was the one who kinda came out with the silver lining on that one.”
“Obviously like me and AJ have never wrestled and a lot of people would have preferred to have a big build-up and essentially, we had the match. It was from what I can remember, it was a lot of fun. I don’t watch my matches back so I can’t say if I’m happy or not but the fact that you’re still talking a year later, you know they just put it on the YouTube channel, so people liked it for sure.”

Balor said he would like another match against Styles because at the time he was still trying to find his feet after returning from injury. He feels like in the year since he is “working with a different frequency now.” Only time will tell if WWE will grant that request.
Although Finn Balor would like to wrestle AJ Styles again, at least we didn’t see the end result of whatever WWE was planning by turning Bray Wyatt into Sister Abigail. Because that storyline was getting even more bizarre every week so there was no telling how far WWE was going to take it at TLC.

The above match is probably better than what WWE had planned. Hopefully, we’ll see AJ and Finn wrestle again so they can get more of a chance to build their angle next time.
