Shane McMahon traveled to Saudi Arabia for WWE Crown Jewel in order to make sure that a SmackDown Live Superstar won the World Cup tournament and was crowned The Best In The World. When The Miz was “injured” during the finals, Shane stepped in himself and defeated Dolph Ziggler to win the match and WWE’s newest traveling trophy.
But since WWE Crown Jewel, it seems that McMahon’s focus went directly to Survivor Series. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE’s plan is to follow-up with Shane winning the World Cup tournament in the first quarter of 2019 now. This would plausibly set up a WrestleMania build for Shane using his new Best In The World Moniker.
Only time will tell how WWE will book this angle but it certainly appears that McMahon is turning heel. The only real question is who he will be facing at WrestleMania and whether or not there will be anything high for him to fall off of.
So WWE hasn’t forgotten about Shane McMahon winning the World Cup Tournament nor have they abandoned the direction that his new trophy gives him. But it seems like they might need to get a little closer to the WrestleMania event before those plans are actually put into place.
