Randy Orton defeated Bobby Roode and Rusev to become the number one contender for the United States Championship. Orton lost the United States Championship at WrestleMania in a fatal four-way match that was won by Jinder Mahal.

Now, Orton will face Mahal for the United States Championship at the upcoming Backlash pay-per-view.
