Edge and Christian open today’s show speaking about the WrestleKingdom match between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega. They both thought it was a great match, and while they would have loved to see a traditional match between between these two men, they understand why it was necessary to go straight to a “No DQ” gimmick match.
Edge believes this was a one-off match, so they couldn’t build to a “No DQ” rematch. This stipulation also protected Jericho who has had quite a lot of time off recently. It’s amazing what Jericho can still do at 47-years old but his age is still a factor, so although Jericho is smart enough to put together a fantastic traditional match, this stipulation allowed them to pull out all the bells and whistles.
Edge and Christian welcome Beth Phoenix to the show.
Phoenix mentions that she just got home from meetings for the upcoming Mixed Match Challenge. She will be a part of the commentary team alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves, and she points out that she’s very excited to learn this side of the business. After years away from the business she had forgotten how hard the travel is, and she admits that she’s exhausted right now.
Edge asks Phoenix if she believes the Women’s Royal Rumble match should main event this month’s Royal Rumble PPV. Phoenix thinks that a lot of this PPV’s promotion has revolved around the Women’s Rumble match, so it only makes sense for it to main event the show. She also thinks that by putting this match on last, WWE could really cement the importance of the match and all of the women in it.
A listener writes into the show and asks Phoenix who she’d love to compete against out of all the women on WWE’s current roster. Phoenix says she’d love to work with Charlotte because she loves Charlotte’s confidence. She believes Charlotte has that same “It” factor that made her father so successful over his career.
Another listener asks Phoenix who she’d pick to team with, past or present, if she was competing in WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge. Phoenix says she’d pick Owen Hart because she loved his in-ring work, and she also loved how he never took himself too seriously in the ring.
Phoenix leaves the show and Edge and Christian begin to answer some fan questions.
A listener writes into the show and asks Edge if he thinks there was any legitimate heat between John Cena and Shawn Michaels after their WrestleMania 23 match. Edge doesn’t believe there was any real heat between those guys at all, but he’s sure there was a competitive rivalry between them in the sense that they both wanted to raise the other guy’s level.
Another listener writes into the show and asks Edge and Christian to predict some WrestleMania 34 matches. Both guys would love to see a WWE Championship match between A.J. Styles and Nakamura. They think Styles is the guy to finally draw some of the fire out of Nakamura that we haven’t really seen since his debut on the main roster.
Edge also likes the idea of an Undertaker/John Cena Dual Retirement match. Rumours of The Undertaker’s retirement have been circulating for years now, but he continues to come back each year for WrestleMania. This is also the one big match that Cena hasn’t had in WWE, so Edge can’t think of a better send off for both men.
Some of their other predictions are Asuka versus Alexa Bliss, Ronda Rousey versus Charlotte, and the heavily rumoured Universal Title match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
Another listener writes into the show and asks Edge and Christian which tag teams they’d love to work with if they were still competing. They mention that they’d love to work with The Usos, The New Day, and The Bludgeon Brothers, amongst others. Edge adds that Luke Harper has to be the most under-utilized and underrated talent in WWE today.
A listener asks Edge if he’d ever consider returning to the ring for one more match. Edge quickly says no, pointing out that spinal stenosis is a very serious issue, and if something were to go wrong in the ring he could die.
Another listener asks Edge and Christian for their thoughts on Goldberg. They both point out that they always got along with Goldberg. Edge always had a good relationship with Goldberg, and he really loves the way Goldberg treats his fans. Christian agrees, adding that Goldberg is a great, caring guy. Christian recalls one time when they were both working in WWE when Goldberg invited him to fly with him on his private jet, so he wouldn’t have to face the long drive to the next town alone.
That sums up today’s episode of E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness. You can listen to the show yourself anytime here, and I’ll catch ya next week for another recap!
