Orton really appreciated the lengths guys like Edge and Christian went to early on in his career to help him get over, and now the tables have turned. He’s working with guys like Aiden English who he’s more than willing to sell for, because he knows it’s up to him to help the new generation of Superstars get over with the WWE Universe.
Regarding the 2011 program with Christian, apparently Orton didn’t want to take the WWE Title from Christian so quickly after Christian had won it. Vince McMahon sat both men down and told them it needed to be this way because they both had to carry the Smackdown brand at that time.
They went on to have a lengthy feud but the culmination match at SummerSlam almost didn’t happen. The initial plan was to conclude the program at SummerSlam but as the PPV was approaching, McMahon wanted to give that spot to Mark Henry instead. Christian fought for the match, insisting that this was basically ‘his WrestleMania’, and McMahon finally agreed.
That sums up today’s episode of E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness. You can listen to the show yourself anytime here, and I’ll catch ya tomorrow for another recap!
