Edge says it appears that Cena found a new ‘shoe’ several months ago when he had several incredible matches with A.J. Styles. Cena says that Styles’ signing with WWE was the culmination of WWE’s search for talented in-ring technicians, which can be dated back to their signings of Daniel Bryan and Cm Punk. Cena says that Styles is fantastic in the ring, but he never felt any pressure to prove that he could hang with Styles physically.
He says that WWE is a different world and when Styles stepped into a WWE ring, he had to prove that he could hang with the likes of John Cena. Styles’ in-ring work is at a very high level, so it was up to Cena and WWE to bring that to the forefront in their matches, ensuring that the WWE Universe found out just how good Styles is.
Cena points out that the art of professional wrestling has come so far, that WWE doesn’t really employ bad in-ring workers anymore. For this reason, the top stars have to display a certain personality and charisma. He says that he considers himself to be on the lower end of the totem pole in terms of in-ring ability, but top stars need a lot more than in-ring skill in order to stay on top of the mountain.
He continues by saying that there has never been a better time to make a name for yourself in WWE, but the complacency backstage is staggering. There are so many individuals who have all the talent in the world and plenty of opportunities to show it, but they’re seemingly uninterested in putting in the extra work that is required to make it to the next level.
