Things are falling into place heading into Survivor Series. Despite the event being two months away, several storylines are already shaping up. After a strong showing around this time last year, expectations are surely high for the last stretch of the year.
There’s clearly a lot to look forward to in the next few months. Jinder Mahal is bound to lose the title eventually. A Hell in a Cell match between him and Shinsuke Nakamura is the most likely direction his reign is headed. Elsewhere, Randy Orton and Rusev are going to lock horns a few more times. Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable are probably going to dethrone the Usos. Sasha Banks is now the Women’s Champion.
With all this excitement in mind, here are four storylines we’ve got to keep our eyes on.
The AJ Styles US Open Challenge
This is great for several reasons. It brings attention to a previously forgotten title, and it also puts AJ Styles on our screens. In recent memory, the United States Championship has been given to talented wrestlers, but their runs with it were wasted (think Kalisto the pre-show champion, or Roman “defend it against the same two guys for three months” Reigns).
Styles has given the title a new purpose with his Open Challenge. The stipulation also means that anyone can challenge for the title. Overlooked members of the roster such as Sin Cara, Luke Harper, Tyler Breeze, Tye Dillinger, Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan, Aiden English, Mike Kannelis, and James Ellsworth can all challenge Styles. Think of all the fresh and exciting match-ups we’ll be able to see. We’re about to see some more great matches on Smackdown, no doubt about it.
