Russo also wonders why out of all the people backstage, Owens decided to ask Sami Zayn to referee the main event match. Russo says that’d be like him asking Jim Cornette to referee a match he was competing in. It just didn’t make any sense whatsoever.
Russo was thrilled to see Bobby Roode debut on this episode of Smackdown, and he hopes WWE comes up with a better way to present him moving forward because this ‘jobber match’ debut wasn’t the best way to debut a star like Roode.
Russo says he has never seen Shelton Benjamin wrestle for WWE because he was busy in TNA during Benjamin’s first run. Nonetheless, it’s nice to see him get a second opportunity with the company. Lane points out that similar to Roode’s debut, this was a lacklustre re-debut for Benjamin. Lane wishes WWE would have established some sort of a story for Roode and Benjamin so their entrance to Smackdown would be more impactful.
Russo really liked the finish to the main event match between A.J. Styles and Kevin Owens. He thought this was a very creative finish, and it’s something that we haven’t seen much in WWE as of late.
That sums up today’s episode of Vince Russo’s The Brand. You can listen to the show yourself anytime here, and I’ll catch ya tomorrow for another recap!
