As previously reported, AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens to capture the WWE US Title at Friday’s WWE Live Event at Madison Square Garden.

Dave Meltzer discussed his win on the latest installment of Wrestling Observer Radio and said that his championship win was a late decision made by the company. While Meltzer explain that he doesn’t know the whole story, he assumes that they didn’t have the battle royal to determine a #1 contender this past Tuesday for nothing if they were going to throw away AJ’s shot at a house show.

In regards to why the match was pushed up to a RAW brand Live Event, Meltzer explained he doesn’t exactly know why right now. Meltzer speculated that one of the reasons WWE decided to have the match pushed up is because Owens could be injured. Meltzer said that he knew Owens was hurt at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view and he’s been working events hurt. Owens may have had these injuries checked out recently and realized these injuries were much worse than he thought. If that was the case, this is most-likely the reason they pushed the match to an earlier date.
