SmackDown Live opens with an overtly-cheesy USA video that quickly turns into a promo for SmackDown.
And here. We. GO! WELCOME BACK, @JohnCena! #SDLive pic.twitter.com/CtauDgK2w3

John Cena makes his way to the ring to a massive reaction from the Phoenix crowd! It’s been a while since he’s stepped foot in a WWE ring and John’s clearly missed it. Let’s Go Cena/Cena Sucks chants wage war as Cena smiles and lets it play out. “Did you miss me?”
Cena reminds us that today is Independence Day. He talks about the USA being the land of opportunity and the American dream. He reiterates his love for the country and says Superstars from all over the world and from all walks of life get the opportunity to step into a WWE ring and prove themselves. He says he does that everytime he steps in the ring as well, he looks to prove himself.
As of late though, a lot of people are spreading rumours about him; saying he sold out and moved to Hollywood, nothing more than a part-time mascot. A small “Yes” chant fires-up. He says he is not a part-timer, he is an all-timer, and that means both Raw and SmackDown Live. The reason he is a free agent is because his career is limited and he wants to go down in a blaze of glory. He says he wants to fight everyone, and if you’re a guy in the back thinking you aren’t one of those guys, you’re exactly the guy he wants. He wants AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe, Brock Lesnar, and even Roman Reigns. He’s back and there’s no better time than Independence day and Cena throws the microphone.
Rusev returns and interrupts Cena! Rusev asks if Cena is saying that he doesn’t work hard but he does. Rusev says that Cena was off playing movies, and WWE has been playing return commercials for Cena for months. Meanwhile he sat at home, rehabbing his shoulder and he wondered where his return commercial is. He says he sent messages to Shane and Daniel Bryan but heard nothing back. He says he’s tired of sitting at home, waiting for the call, and he won’t let Cena take his chances. So he’s here tonight to prove that Cena, just like the USA is a lie and a joke.
After @JohnCena essentially just called out the entire @WWE roster, the #BulgarianBrute @RusevBUL EMERGES! #SDLive ?? pic.twitter.com/CfrLJQeMfz

Cena asks Rusev is he knows where he is. He says we aren’t in Rusev’s home of Bulge-area, this is the USA. John invites Rusev to the ring and says he will punch him. Rusev says that all American’s think they can boss people around. In Bulgaria they march and show their strength on days like this, whereas American’s sit at home eating cheeseburgers and hot dogs, to which the fans cheer and chant “Yes”. Cena says to not forget the fireworks because they also love to blow stuff up. A “USA” chant blows the roof off of the building and Rusev holds his flag up.
Cena says to take it easy on Rusev because he’s been gone a while and been thinking too much. He says America doesn’t boss people around, it earned the right to have a voice. Cena asks Rusev to come to the ring and place his Bulgarian flag in one corner, he’ll put old glory in the other, and we’ll have a Flag Match. Rusev says yes….but not today. He says he won’t be bossed around, and they will only fight on his terms. Rusev swings his flag and Cena conducts a “USA” chant for Rusev to walk away to.
Great open to SmackDown Live, few can talk like Cena. He shows a level of intensity and authenticity that few others posses in today’s game.
We see Daniel Bryan backstage and he’s joined by Chad Gable and AJ Styles. Bryan says he is sick of Kevin Owens calling him and complaining. Bryan says that Owens doesn’t want either Gable or Styles in the battle royale tonight, and he has a point because he has beaten both men. Bryan says that to settle this, AJ can face Chad Gable tonight to decide who will be in the match. AJ says he’s happy for a little competition, to which Gable looks at him and says he’s more than a little competition. That match is up next!
UP NEXT: Per @WWEDanielBryan, it’s WIN AND YOU’RE IN (tonight’s Independence Day Battle Royal) as @AJStylesOrg will meet @WWEGable! #SDLive pic.twitter.com/C0cCpxass8

AJ Styles Vs. Chad Gable
After some circling, Gable takes AJ’s back and slams him to the mat. Gable keeps the back, picks AJ up and hits a pseudo-German suplex. Gable looks for a back suplex but AJ lands on his feet and kicks Gable in the leg.
AJ sends Gable to the ropes, duck, leapfrog, and a dropkick from The Phenomenal One as we head to commercial.

We return to see AJ on the top rope. Gable jumps up with him and looks for a belly-to-belly but AJ holds on and slides down between Gable’s legs. AJ knocks Gable down and looks for a springboard but Chad leaps to his feet and hits the ropes, knocking AJ down. Gable looks for a moonsault but AJ moves and Gable lands on his feet.

Gable runs at Styles but gets caught with a suplex into the corner. AJ lifts Gable for a Styles Clash but Gable breaks free and right into an ankle lock! AJ rolls through but Gable holds onto the ankle lock. AJ finally escapes and applies the calf crusher! Gables rolls through and both men spring to their feet only to both fall at the same time and hold their ankles.
They get up and AJ kicks Gable then swings for a punch but Gable catches him with a huge belly-to-back suplex. Gable looks for another suplex but AJ rolls him up for a near-fall. Styles hits Gable with a Pele kick, then takes to the apron and hits the Phenomenal Forearm for the win!
Winner: AJ Styles
If you’ve watched NXT you know what Chad Gable can do but wow, those two need to work again with a much longer time limit. That would be incredible. After the match AJ approached Gable and helps him to his feet, then nods at him for before leaving. AJ is part of the Independence Day Battle Royale.
We go backstage and see Mojo Rawley holding a Hype Bro’s t-shirt. Zack Ryder approaches and says that he shouldn’t worry about their quick loss to The Uso’s last week. Rawley seems to not want to be a team anymore but Ryder informs him that he got them booked in the Battle Royale tonight, to which they joke about who will win.
We see Carmella making her way to the ring, briefcase in hand, accompanied by James Ellsworth.

Carmella says the fans look so disappointed that she won the Money In The Bank twice in a row, and she asks if they really thought anyone else could win it. Carmella says the briefcase means she can and will win the WWE Women’s Championship from Naomi whenever she chooses.
Naomi comes out, glowing, to interrupt Carmella. Naomi congratulates Carmella but then firmly reminds her that she is the Women’s Champion. She says the contract lets Carmella cash-in whenever she wants but she isn’t scared because her eyes are always open and her glow is always on. And as for “Ellsworthless”, there’s someone with a bone to pick with him…
#SDLive General Manager @WWEDanielBryan has something to say to @realellsworth…and the @WWEUniverse in Phoenix LOVES IT! pic.twitter.com/LOYR9L90Us

The fans chant for Bryan as he asks what he can do about Ellsworth. He says he is barring Ellsworth from the arena tonight, to which Ellsworth laughs and says he will find a way back in. Bryan laughs sarcastically with him and says he’s also fining him $10,000 and don’t expect a cheque for a while, because he’s suspended for 30 days. And if he doesn’t leave in the next few seconds and should he break any rules, Bryan will strip Carmella of her briefcase. Carmella freaks out and sends Ellsworth from the ring. The fans are ecstatic.
The Women’s Champion will put her title on the line after the break!
