WWE put an end to their Superstars having Twitch streaming accounts and doing Cameo videos for fans. This was said to be due to sensitive information leaking. Fans are not happy about this, and they have spoken out in droves about WWE saying that Superstars have 30 days to cease all third party activities, and that might include YouTube.
Vince McMahon made it clear to Superstars that WWE owns their legal names. You can read the exact wording that gives WWE the power of ownership in their Superstar contracts by clicking here.
Fightful got the actual email that Vince McMahon sent his Superstars. You can read it here:
“Furthering my comments last Sunday regarding the reinvention of our product, it is imperative that we promote and protect our brand in every conceivable way. Some of you are engaged with outside 3rd parties using your name and likeness in ways that our detrimental to our company. It is imperative that these activities be terminated within the next 30 days (by Friday October 2). Continued violations will result in fines, suspension or termination at WWE’s discretion. These actions are necessary in order to rebuild our brand as we enter the next phase of growth at WWE.
I thank you for your cooperation in this matter and for all of your efforts towards the rejuvenation of WWE.
Vince.”
This move by WWE caused a lot of people to speak out. Mick Foley called it a crummy move. CM Punk trolled it relentlessly, as did Renee Young.
This is not a good look for WWE, but it did come after AJ Styles reveled his positive coronavirus test via his Twitch stream. WWE doesn’t want their independent contractors disclosing such details about their personal medical information.
