Rey Mysterio’s WWE return was met with a lot of excitement as they did their best to educate newer fans on why they should be happy to see Mr. 6-1-9 back in WWE.
With WrestleMania rolling up on us, it seems like WWE has a pretty good idea about what kind of match they want to book Mysterio in for the big event. Giancarlo Aulino said on Barnburner’s No Holds Barred podcast that WWE is pretty set on a United States Title Match at WrestleMania for Rey, the only real question is who he will be facing.
“I spoke to a few sources as well and right now Rey Mysterio is being penciled in for a United States title match but they’re still working on who is going to go into WrestleMania with the title. Three names being discussed: Shinsuke Nakamura holding it until then to face Rey Mysterio. Samoa Joe is another one or Andrade Cien Almas — can you imagine Rey Mysterio vs Andrade Cien Almas, two Mexicans for the United States Title?”
“I’m hearing too that two of the three names of whoever doesn’t walk into WrestleMania with the United States Title, they will be in the Andre The Giant Battle Royal. So there’s going to be plenty of star power in that match.”
It seems like WWE is working out some finer details, but it looks like they’re ready to possibly give Rey Mysterio his first title run since his WWE return.
It will be interesting to see which name WWE goes with, but it seems like no matter who they pick out of those three, it could result in a pretty epic match. You should never count out the possibility of WWE booking a few multi-person matches for their biggest show of the year and the US Title could very well be one of those matches in case they want to go with all four Superstars.
